#tpt: Mayans MC

5 February 2019

Today’s Top Pick

My top pick for the week is the television show Mayans MC, the first spinoff of the show Sons of Anarchy.  Set in Santo Padre, California on the border of the US and Mexico, Mayans MC, takes place four years after the events of SOA.

While this show is similar to SOA in that it follows a motorcycle club—this time, the Mayans MC—it also differs greatly.  The MC is full of eccentric characters, including President of the club Obispo “Bishop” Losa—cousin of Mayans founder Marcus Alvarez from SOA—, brothers Angel and Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, and Johnny “El Coco” Cruz, just to name a few.

The series starts with EZ Reyes being released from prison and prospecting (think of rushing or pledging a sorority/fraternity) the Mayans under the tutelage of his older brother Angel.  Mayans MC focuses on the day to day life of the MC members as they deal with business.  That business often includes working with the Galindo Cartel, lead by Miguel Galindo, a task that some of the MC members do not agree with.

Ez and Angel Reyes being pals (with Bishop casually in the background)

Without giving too much away, I can say that this show is really entertaining.  I love all the conflict, betrayal, and angst as well as the brotherhood between the MC members.

I loved SOA and was beyond excited when I heard that there was going to be a spinoff of the original show.  I’m actually really happy with the spinoff centering on a different MC.  The world Kurt Sutter created has so much that can be explored and I’m enjoying learning more about it.

If you were a fan of SOA, I would definitely recommend checking out Mayans MC.  Do any of you watch it?  If so, let me know.  I love discussing shows and characters with people and I don’t know anyone else that watches it.
