Today’s Top Pick
I’m back this week with an amazing top pick Tuesday. I’ve chosen Marvel’s The Punisher.
I heard about this show when it first started, but was unable to watch as I don’t have a Netflix account. Recently, a friend has been gracious enough to let me borrow her account and I was finally able to download The Punisher. I had been waiting to watch this show for an incredibly long time so I was very excited to see that it was finally available for download on Netflix (as I don’t have wifi at home right now).
Now, let me just start by saying that I have always been a fan of Frank Castle/The Punisher as a character. While I never watched the show Daredevil where he was introduced, I have seen the 2004 movie and seen him in other media.
This adaptation of The Punisher is truly wonderful. Firstly, Frank Castle is a precious human being who just really needs a hug. All I want for Castle is a happy ending. He’s had so many awful things happen to him, and just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does.
For those who haven’t seen Daredevil, Frank Castle was a US marine whose entire family was murdered in a conspiracy beyond what could be imagined. Castle takes it upon himself to exact revenge on those responsible by donning the name The Punisher and killing all those involved.
After his “death” in Daredevil, we see Frank Castle going by the name Pete Castiglione and working at a construction site in the first episode of the show. When events occur that draw Castle back to his work as the Punisher, he uncovers an even bigger conspiracy, all leading back to his time in the military.
I really don’t want to give too much away about this show, other than the fact that there are many twists and turns throughout and the acting is brilliant. Jon Bernthal is phenomenal as Frank Castle and I was so excited to see Ben Barnes as Billy Russo. What I find so amazing about Bernthal is his ability to make Castle a character that is so well-loved by fans. He commits awful murders and tortures his enemies to get the information he needs and yet fans—myself included—still see him as someone who needs to be protected at all costs. My heart truly breaks for him. He doesn’t smile often, but when he does it’s literally the most precious thing I have ever seen.
It’s been a while since I’ve come across a character I love so deeply, but that’s exactly what I feel towards Frank Castle. I love him so much that I’m actually going to watch the episodes of Daredevil that he is in—even if I have no idea what’s going on—simply because I need to see more of him before the next season. I’m even working on trying to get my sister to watch the show so I have someone to discuss with.
I love this character so much that I’ve also put the newest Punisher graphic novels on hold at my local library. I currently have volumes one and two which I am going to check out tonight.
Let me know if you’ve seen The Punisher or can think of any similar shows you think I should check out!
