#tpt: 2018 Movie Round-Up

9 January 2018

Today’s Top Picks

I am going to start the year off with a Top Pick Tuesday outlining the movies I want to see in 2018.  Like last year, I’ve split them into two main categories—ones I want to watch in theatres, and honourable mentions that I wish to see, but will probably wait to come out on dvd. Without further ado, my 2018 top movie picks!

Movies I Want to Watch in Theatres

Black Panther (February 16)

I am beyond excited to see this movie.  From the very first time Wakanda was even mentioned in a Marvel film, I’ve wanted to see more about this fictional place.  With the introduction of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, my desire for a movie all about T’Challa solidified.  We don’t know too much about him, and I can’t wait to find out more.  Also, Chadwick Boseman is a boss and brings so much to this awesome character.

Avengers: Infinity War (May 4)

You may start to sense a theme in what movies I wish to see in theatres.  If you’ve read any of my previous posts, it should come as no surprise how badly I wish to see the next Avengers flick.  I’m all about that superhero craze.  So many amazing characters are coming together for this film.  I mean seriously, who isn’t excited to see the Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy?  There is so much to look forward to with this film.  All the characters being brought together in Infinity War has brought forth so many opportunities for some comedic gold, but also some really touching moments (I’m sure).  I’m really interested in seeing how these characters battle Thanos and try to stop him from getting all the Infinity Stones.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22)

There really isn’t much to go on with this film, but that hasn’t stopped me from being really excited for it.  I have always loved dinosaurs and the original Jurassic Park films have always been favourites of mine.  I loved Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt, and think this film will be just as amazing as the first.  Dinosaurs, Christ Pratt, a cameo by Jeff Goldblum, what more could we ask for really?

Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)

When I first heard about the first Ant-Man movie, I’ll admit, I was skeptical.  I didn’t really know much about Ant-Man and didn’t really care for him.  However, being a part of the MCU, I figured I should see the movie, and boy am I ever glad I did.  Paul Rudd is phenomenal as Ant-Man.  I loved the first movie so much and loved him in Civil War even more.  Scott Lang is just such a hilarious character, so of course I’m going to love this movie too.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (July 20)

I wasn’t going to put this on the theatres list at first, but I honestly loved Mamma Mia so much that I cannot wait for the sequel.  I listen to the soundtrack all the time, and when I heard they were making a second film I was excited.  I really enjoyed the characters in the film and the story.  I cannot wait to see more about Donna’s past with Sam, Bill, and Harry.  I’m a little sad regarding the premise of [spoiler alert] Donna’s death and how Sophie is worried about raising a child without her mother, but overall, it looks like a really fun movie.

Venom (October 5)

I honestly know nothing about this film, other than the fact that it stars Tom Hardy as one of my favourite Spiderman villains, Venom, and that seems to be enough for me.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (November 2)

Again, this is a film I don’t really know much about, other than the basic premise and some of the cast.  That hasn’t stopped me from being really excited about it though.  Tchaikovsky’s ballet is one of my favourite musical scores of all time.  I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing the ballet in Toronto and was mesmerized by it.  It is a story I love and I cannot wait to see how it is portrayed in a cinematic film.

Fantastic Beats: The Crimes of Grindelwald (November 16)

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I am really looking forward to this film.  Newt Scamander is precious and any film with him is one I will watch.  Not to mention the return of Queenie Goldstein, Creedence Barebone, and Jacob Kowalski, as well as Jude Law as Albus Dumbeldore—count me in.

Movies I Want to See (probably on DVD)

  • Paddington 2 (January 12)
  • Winchester (February 2)
  • Tomb Raider (March 16)
  • Sherlock Gnomes (March 23)
  • Ready Player One (March 30)
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
  • Deadpool 2 (June 1)
  • Ocean’s Eight (June 8)
  • Sicario 2: Soldado (June 29)
  • Mission: Impossible 6 (July 27)
  • Robin Hood (September 21)
  • Goosebumps: Horror Land (September 21)
  • Smallfoot (September 28)
  • Holmes and Watson (November 9)
  • Creed 2 (November 21)
  • Aquaman (December 21)
  • Mary Poppins Returns (December 25)

What movies are you excited to see this year?  Have any suggestions that I may have missed?  Let me know, dreamers!
