And the Winner is…
Though I didn’t quite reach my goal of 20 books in 2015, I’m still incredibly happy with those I did read. Out of 16 books, I’ve thought long and hard about which book was my favourite read. I tried to keep in mind what I loved about these books as I read them and see which ones stuck with me the most. The winner is—drum roll please—a tie between The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan and Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton. Okay, so I cheated a little and couldn’t actually cut it down to one book. I think I always knew that Rick Riordan’s Blood of Olympus was going to be my favourite, but I was surprised myself when I couldn’t stop thinking of Tiny Pretty Things.
The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan is the 5th and final book in the Heroes of Olympus series—which is a sequel of sorts to the Percy Jackson series. One thing you should know about me is that I absolutely love Riordan’s works. Though I am well over the suggested audience, the Percy Jackson series has been one of my favourites since I picked up the very first book so long ago. Ever since, I’ve been hooked on the stories that Riordan chooses to tell. I’ve always had such an incredible love for Greek and Roman mythology, so when I discovered a series that mixed mythology with modern times, I fell in love. I also love Egyptian and Norse mythology, which Riordan has also written about, but that’s a story for another time.
Without giving away any major details of the story, The Blood of Olympus perfectly wraps up a great quest that has been the driving force for this series. In this novel, we see our heroes embark on the final leg of their journey to stop Gaia from rising. Through laughter and tears, this book took me on a wild ride through one of my favourite worlds. If you’ve never read any of this series, or the Percy Jackson series, I would definitely recommend them!
Now, on to the book which genuinely surprised me with how much I would come to love it—Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton. Tiny Pretty Things takes place in an exclusive ballet school in Manhattan. It centers on three main girls—Gigi, Bette, and June—all of whom are fighting for the top spot at the school. This fight to be the best results in many cruel tricks and loads of backstabbing. When I first picked up this book, I thought it would just be a fun, entertaining read for me to enjoy on breaks and lunch at work. However, the more I read, the more hooked I became on this book. There’s so many interesting twists and plenty of secrets to go around. I loved trying to figure everything out as I read along. I also really loved the ending, which kind of leaves you hanging, waiting for the sequel, Shiny Broken Pieces, which is due out sometime this year! I don’t want to spoil any of the twists and turns that this book is sure to take you on, so go on and read it for yourself, I promise you’ll enjoy it!!
Please feel free to share your favourite books of 2015 with me! I’d love to hear what you’re reading.
