Our flight was set to leave Toronto at 12:45 pm from Gate 39 terminal 3 with WestJet Airlines. Around 12:03, we were informed that our plane was still in the hangar (not in Toronto) and we would be on a plane leaving from Gate 29 (thankfully just across from us). Once boarded, I sat by the window so I could see outside. Take off was really neat and everything looked so neat from the sky. Lake Superior still had quite a bit of ice. It felt like forever to get out of Ontario though.
During out flight, we were offered juice, water, tea, or coffee and your choice of a salty or sweet snack (crackers or cookies). As someone who didn’t expect any food on the flight, I was pleasantly surprised.
After a long flight, we arrived in Vancouver on time. Upon arriving at the airport (which is beautiful), we went through US customs and had to identify our baggage. After we found our gate, we went for a bite to eat (thank you Tim Hortons). Side note: Burger King has delicious chicken nuggets!!
After sitting around for a while, we were finally able to board our flight to Kahului, Maui. We knew this flight was going to be another long one, so we brought magazines and word searches.
We arrived in Maui at about 9:20pm (Maui time), which was 12:20 Vancouver Time or 3:20 am Toronto time! We had been up since 5am—almost a full day of travelling to get to Hawaii!
Our Aunt Raye and Uncle Bill met us at the baggage claim and we walked to the car. Side note: Kahului Airport is absolutely gorgeous. It’s open concept, so the minute you step off the plane, you’re hit with the warm tropical breeze. It was lovely.
We took the scenic, but dark, route to our hotel, where we are on the 4th floor. Our condo had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and living room. Our bedroom was pretty large and we had our own bathroom and closet. The hotel, Kamaole Nalu, also had a really nice pool.
Our uncle made Mai Tais and we chatter a bit before we went for a short walk with our aunt. We then unpacked our luggage and went to bed at 11:30pm. We were officially awake for over 24 hours! Our first day wasn’t filled with much of Maui, but as you can expect, we were just super excited to finally be there.
All in all, our trip was off to a good start. Stay tuned for more from our trip to Maui. Until next time, Aloha!
